'Reviews' - what the critics say
|
| |
"...Fensome and Mulder make heavy going
of the first 10 minutes, but the pace hots up as the star of the evening
arrives in the person of Kym Suttle.
He is the archetypal farcical figure, a somewhat randy country bumpkin
whose naive ways are matched by an irresistibly vulnerable charm. In the
classic tradition of the farce, he becomes the fall-guy and the accidental
hero of the piece.
It is not a great role, but Suttle attacks it with gusto and keen
theatrical intelligence. He measures his effects, he knows where his laughs
lie and he gets them effortlessly every time..."

ETR (expected time of revival) for Boeing-Boeing,
the evergreen, festive comedy, is December 1, at the Loft theatre of the
Natal Playhouse. And it may not be such a comfortable flight, judging
by the panic in the flight deck, left Mark Mulder, and his friend Kym
Suttle. The play, about an architect and his three air-hostess fiancées,
is scheduled to stay at the Loft until the end of the year

Cinderella and the Coat of Skins, BAC, London: " James
Menzies-Kitchin's smart direction coupled with Kym Suttle's choreography
makes this Cinderella compelling viewing. Clever human mortgages are created
where the actors draw images around each other, tumbling and leaping around
in a manner reminiscent of the great Pina Bausch"

Miss Julie, by Strindberg (choreographed and performed
by Kym Suttle): "This excellent production has been newly translated...
THe lack of reticence is felt in the language and the performances, as
well as in a strange sequence which erupts on stage after Lady Julie and
servant Jean have gone into the bedroom. Two dancers (Erika Glover and
Kym Suttle) perform a wild, abandoned ps de deux, knocking over the chairs,
setting the light swinging violently and ending with the man holding the
woman upside down by her ankles... without having to change a word of
the text it turns up the heat effectively."

Naughty Boys: "Eric Bouvron and Kym Suttle as the
Dentist and his male nurse respectively created a crazy duo which not
only nearly lost the patient but also nearly lost some members of the
audience who seemed to have split their sides."
- Germaine Glueck

Merlin, by Tankred Dorst, Arts
Threshold, London: " ... this talented ensemble try their best -
memorable moments include...and Kym Suttle's final eerie mid-air dance."

exquisite dance as the pure Sir Galahad."

Get
Screwed! written, directed and performed by Kym Suttle: No
need to go into too much detail on this one: just make sure you've got
a ticket for it. It was packed for the opening performance, which says
something for the energy being generated by the Loft Theatre Company.
Its a punchy satirical song-and-dance rather than cabaret, full of
sharp wit and sheer good fun. The engaging and seemingly effortless performances
conceal a lot of hard work, polished with old-fashioned verve and energy.
Not many shows will put their audiences in as good a mood as this."

Get Screwed!: If all that po-faced angst of experimental
theatre is prompting you to reach for the razor-blades, Get Screwed! may
juat save your miserable, pointless, ultimately futile life... Dressed
in standard cabaret style evening gear, Kym Suttle, Wilmien Rossouw, Lisa
Bobbert and Christopher Catherine (with Anthony Stonier on piano) perform
their hour long romp with wit verve and - above all -a thorough undrestanding
of what will bump an audience's funny bone..... the fa'la'la-ing foursome,
sometimes sounding like the New York cult group The Roches - produce enough
sweetly harmonised, witty one-liners to hold one's attention throughout."

"THE BEAUX' STRATEGEM directed
and designed by John Caviggia for the University of Cape Town Drama School
(Little Theatre)...
...Kym Suttle makes a delightfully foppish Aimwell astutely balancing
a tightrope between effeminacy poetic womanising..."

...The leads were competently filled. Kym Suttle as Aimwell was aptly
flamboyant and foppish in his finery, yet a surprisingly earnest and honest
young man in his nightshirt..."
-FIONA CHISHOLM
"... overall it is the men's voice work which is impressive.
There is for example Kym Suttle as Aimwell, a very buoyant and amusing
gentleman..."

"HE may be a "bear of very little brain", but AA Milne's
Winnie the Pooh is still a most entertaining and lovable bear and
Napac's Loft Theatre Company production, directed by Murray McGibbon,
makes for light and nostalgic entertainment....
...Lindelani Buthelezi is a cuddly and enquiring Pooh, Wilmien
Rossouw is the ever-anxious, roly-poly Piglet (it was a little disconcerting
to have Piglet referred to as "her" though), Eeyore (Timothy
Wells) is suitably depressed, pessimistic and sarcastic and not very "how"
at all, and Kym Suttle is a growly, bouncy Tigger experimenting with what
Tiggers like best.
It's all lots of fun and the adults often seem to be enjoying themselves
more than the children, so don't feel that a child in tow is a pre-requisite
for attendance."
